  1. Is this the official website?

    No. This is an independent visitor journal. We are not affiliated with any tour operator or the National Park Service.

  2. Do you sell tickets?

    No. We sell nothing and never process payments. Always book through official channels.

  3. How long does the visit take?

    About 2.5–3 hours with the boat. You can linger. I would not try to fold it into a spare hour between other plans.

  4. Is it scary for kids?

    It is history, not a haunted house. The cellhouse is a prison building and the audio does not talk down to anyone, which I respect. Most kids I have watched handle it better than the adults. The night departure has atmosphere — darker halls, a closer feeling — so I would skip that if a child is already uneasy in dim places. Daylight is the kinder introduction.

  5. Why is it always sold out?

    Limited boats, limited island capacity. In high season the departures go weeks ahead. That is a physical limit, not a trick. If your dates are fixed, look early. If they are not, try a weekday in the shoulder months.

  6. Day or night tour?

    Day for views, night for atmosphere. First visit: day. Second visit, or if you already know you like cities after dark: night. Bring a warmer layer for the evening boat than you think you need.

  7. Can you see the Golden Gate from the island?

    Yes, when the fog allows. In July it often does not. In October it often does. I have stood at the same rail in both months. The visit is still the visit when the bridge is missing. You came for a rock in a working bay, not for a guarantee.
